Iron is an essential mineral involved in hemoglobin synthesis and oxygen delivery. Low iron levels can result in anemia, fatigue, shortness of breath, and low red blood cell production. Iron also plays a critical role in clearing out infections and maintaining a strong immune system.

High iron levels can be associated with an acute inflammatory response or iron overload disorders. Excess iron over long periods of time can result in liver damage, heart problems, and arthritis.
