Blood sugar imbalances are skyrocketing today and continue to bankrupt the American health care system every year. It is estimated that 1 out of every 5 Americans has higher than normal blood sugar levels. While following a low glycemic diet and proper exercising can help improve blood sugar control drastically, there are still many individuals suffering with high blood sugar today. This is because they have a one or more of the 9 causes of high blood sugar that are not related to diet and exercise:

  • Poor Thyroid Function

  • Poor Liver Function

  • Poor Adrenal Function

  • Systemic Inflammation

  • Autoimmunity against Pancreas

  • Poor Digestive Function

  • Nutritional Deficiencies

  • Medications

  • Neurologically Induced High Blood Sugar

There are 4 different types of Diabetes, all of which are caused by a problem with levels of the hormone called insulin. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas and is required to deliver sugar from the blood to every cell in the human body. When insulin levels become abnormal, one of the following may result:

  1. Type 1 Diabetes: Caused by autoimmune destruction of the insulin producing “beta cells” of the pancreas.

  2. Type 2 Diabetes: Caused by an inability to regulate insulin levels in the body (reversible and typically due to poor diet/lifestyle and metabolic disturbances).

  3. Type 1.5 (LADA) Diabetes: A combination of both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. Type 1.5 Diabetes progresses more slowly over time, that is why it is termed “Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults”.

  4. Gestational Diabetes: Caused by fluctuations in pregnancy hormones.

When the causes of abnormal insulin levels are properly identified and addressed using a functional medicine approach, remission for both pre-diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes is possible. This is the ultimate goal, since chronic Diabetes can lead to serious health consequences including:

  • Kidney Damage

  • Neuropathies

  • Retina Damage

  • High Blood Pressure

  • Heart Disease

  • Stroke
